Sono da poco passate le tre di notte…mi sveglio, vedo che il vento è girato e anche leggermente calato, la rotta è per 60 gradi nord, non va bene e decido allora di strambare, svuoto il ballast sopravento e porto la zavorra d’acqua sottovento, prendo la mia pila fronte e salgo in pozzetto per preparare la manovra.In quel momento percepisco un rumore nuovo, un rumore fin’ora mai sentito, sembra quasi che il code sventoli a volte ma invece è bello gonfio, resto li ancora un’istante e il suono è più forte, più vicino, allora mi giro verso il lato sottovento e con il favore di una luna velata scorgo la sagoma di una balena, veramente a pochi metri dalla barca, poi vedo che sono due, subito mi sale una certa inquietudine.La balena più grande sembra molto più grande di Obportus, e io ho letto vari aneddoti su collisioni con balene, allora rallento poggiando leggermente anche se facendo così mi avvicino a loro. Rallento di due nodi e incredibilmente anche loro rallentano, come incuriosite da quello strano oggetto galleggiante. L’inquietudine passa e sale un’emozione incredibile, sono creature magnifiche, salgono sbuffano e si immergono ancora, restando pochi centimetri sott’acqua e questo per diverse volte. Vorrei immortalare il momento ma è troppo buio per il telefono e la GoPro (quindi la foto che vedete non è stata scatta ieri 😎) resto ancora a guardarle un po’, poi più nulla. Se ne sono andate, decido quindi di strambare e ripartire sull’altro bordo. L’emozione è fortissima non avevo mai visto una balena così vicina, è stato un momento magico.

At that moment I perceive a new noise, a noise I have never heard before, it almost seems as if the tail is waving at times but instead it is beautifully swollen, I remain there for another moment and the sound is louder, closer, then I turn towards the leeward side and with the favor of a veiled moon I see the silhouette of a whale, really a few meters from the boat, then I see that there are two, a certain uneasiness immediately comes over me. The largest whale seems much larger than Obportus, and I have read various anecdotes about collisions with whales, so I slow down and rest slightly even if by doing so I get closer to them. I slow down by two knots and incredibly they slow down too, as if intrigued by that strange floating object. The restlessness passes and an incredible emotion rises, they are magnificent creatures, they rise, snort and dive again, remaining a few centimeters under water and this for several times. I would like to immortalize the moment but it is too dark for the phone and the GoPro (so the photo you see is not real) I still look at them for a while, then nothing more. They’re gone, so I decide to jibe and start again on the other tack. The emotion is very strong, I had never seen a whale so close, it was a magical moment.
